Background
In 1972, Olga Korbut captured the heart of the World with her performance at the Munich Olympics. In doing so, she introduced the sport of gymnastics to hundreds of thousands of young girls across the United States. After the launch of Olga Korbut's career in Munich many awards and honours quickly followed. BBC television viewers voted olga sports personality of the year; the Associated press named her "Female of the Year," and ABC Television, "Top Athlete of the Year." In 1975, the Women's Sports Foundations selected her "Athlete of the Year". and she was also named 'Mother of Gymnastics.' Olga followed up her success at the MONTREAL Olympics in 1976 where she attained two medals, one gold and one silver.
There have been 13 books in different countries written about olga and over 450,000 magazines and newspapers in all countries publishing articles on her development before during and into the present day of her notoriety.
The Legend Lands In Birmingham
In the summer of 1998 Olga Korbut was the guest of Birmingham City Council and hosted as resident coach to the City of Birmingham Gymnastics Club. During her coaching visit to Birmingham olga oversaw a battery of testing days for aspiring gymnasts and coaching clinics that saw coaches from all over the country congregate to not only hear her philosophies on coaching but also to meet a true legend of gymnastics history. Olga later returned in early 2000 to view the results of her earlier visit
