Report

Both Ian Greenhill and Phil Barrow, 'Tecchnical Officials,' were lucky enough to be a part of British gymnastics history. The place was Manchester, the dates 26th-29th July and the venue for the 17th Commonwealth Games, that of the old Victorian railway station better known as the GMEX. It supplied ample room for two training gyms a full competition podium and seating for five and a half thousand spectators, all of which were sold for every competition. What an atmosphere!

The Mens team competition was a close fought affair between England and Canada. Australia fell behind as a result of too many mistakes in performances. The event was supported by a very appreciative crowd which brought out the best in all of the competitors. Final scores: England 162.075pts; Canada 161.350pts; Australia 159.100pts; Scotland 153.275pts; Malaysia 152.050pts; India 151.600pts; South Africa 151.550pts; Wales 142.525pts. Not only did England take the gold in the team competition but also in the Overall Championship with the performance of Kanukai Jackson.

The girls competition although producing some good performances lacked the same drama in the team event with Australia streaking so far ahead of the rest of the field by 4.425pts. Closer was the points difference between Englands Silver medal place and Canadas bronze, 0.1. Beth Tweddle was the higest scorer in the English team for the Individual All-round competition finishing in 2nd place. Final team scores: Australia 111.325pts; England 106.90pts; Canada 106.80pts; New Zealand 100.0pts; Wales 98.925pts; Scotland 97.925 & N Ireland 96.050pts
